Over £1 billion has been awarded to roll out lightning-fast broadband in hard-to-reach towns and villages across the UK. The funding will help to bring gigabit-capable broadband to over 1 million homes and businesses by the end of 2025.
The government has signed contracts with 12 companies to deliver the project, which will see the rollout of full-fibre broadband to areas that currently lack access to fast and reliable internet.
According to the government, the project will not only improve internet speeds but also boost local economies and create new job opportunities.
The funding will be used to build new fibre-optic cables and upgrade existing infrastructure to deliver speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps. This will enable households and businesses to access a range of online services, including cloud computing, online learning, and remote working.
‘This is a major milestone in our mission to level up the UK and ensure that everyone has access to fast and reliable internet,’ said the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
The project is part of the government’s commitment to delivering gigabit-capable broadband to 85% of the UK by 2025. The funding will also support the development of new technologies and innovations in the broadband sector.
The government has also announced plans to introduce new regulations to ensure that broadband providers deliver the speeds and services they promise to customers.
The project is expected to create thousands of new jobs and stimulate local economies, particularly in rural areas where broadband access is currently limited.
‘We are committed to delivering a world-class broadband network that will benefit everyone in the UK,’ said the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
The government has also announced plans to invest in digital skills training and education to help people develop the skills they need to take advantage of the new broadband services.
The project is a major step forward in the government’s efforts to level up the UK and ensure that everyone has access to the digital services they need to thrive.
