Affordable, reliable broadband: Anything else just feels ‘criminal …’

Affordable, reliable broadband is a basic human right, and anything else is just criminal. It’s a fundamental necessity for modern life, and yet millions of people across the UK are still struggling to get a decent connection.

According to a recent report, over 5 million households in the UK are still without access to full-fibre broadband, and many more are stuck with slow and unreliable connections.

But why is this the case? Why are we still living in a world where people are forced to choose between paying exorbitant prices for a decent internet connection or going without?

The answer lies in the lack of investment in rural areas, where the infrastructure is often outdated and inadequate. It’s a classic case of the digital divide, where those who are already disadvantaged are being left further behind.

As one resident of a rural area put it, ‘I’m lucky if I get 1mbps, and that’s if I’m lucky. Most of the time, I’m stuck with a connection that’s slower than a dial-up modem.’

But it’s not just rural areas that are affected. Urban areas are also struggling to get decent connections, with many residents stuck with slow and unreliable connections.

The consequences of this are far-reaching. People are missing out on job opportunities, education, and healthcare because they can’t get a decent internet connection.

So what can be done to address this issue? The government needs to invest more in rural areas, and provide incentives for companies to build out their networks. We also need to see more competition in the market, so that people have more options and can get a better deal.

As one expert put it, ‘The key is to create a level playing field, where everyone has access to the same opportunities and resources.’

It’s time for us to take action and demand better. We deserve better. We deserve affordable, reliable broadband, and it’s time for the government and companies to deliver.

So let’s make some noise, and demand change. Let’s make sure that everyone has access to the internet, and that no one is left behind.
